Daniel J. Lee, MD, Otologist, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
Dr. Lee, who teamed with Eileen Jones to start the Gift of Hearing Foundation in 2004, is an Otologist in the Department of Otolaryngology, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) and the Department of Otology and Laryngology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. He has recently been named the principal investigator for the recently established Helene and Grant Wilson Auditory Brainstem Implant program, a clinical and research effort based at MEEI and Massachusetts General Hospital.
He is board-certified in Otolaryngology and is a specialist in otology, neurotology and skull base surgery. His clinical interests focus on pediatric and adult cochlear implantation, auditory brainstem implants, sudden single-sided deafness, and superior semicircular canal dehiscence.
Dr. Lee is a Principal Investigator and Research Associate in the Eaton-Peabody Laboratory at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He has received continuous funding from the NIH since 2003 and his basic science research efforts involve the study of auditory brainstem circuits and auditory brainstem implants.
Dr. Lee received his BA in Biology from Columbia and his MD from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed his internship in the Department of Surgery and residency in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine . He also completed a research and clinical fellowship in the Center for Hearing Sciences and the Division of Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery under the mentorship of Lloyd Minor MD, John Niparko, MD, and David Ryugo PhD. He is former director of the Cochlear Implant Program at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
Dr. Lee has lectured extensively throughout the United States and abroad. Dr. Lee has co-authored a number of basic and clinical research publications and has been the recipient of several NIH and private foundation research grants.
In addition to serving on the boards of The Gift of Hearing Foundation and Partners for a Greater Voice, Dr. Lee has also founded and contributes to several web-based sites that provide educational resources to cochlear implant candidates, patients, and their families. He is also dedicated to improving reimbursement gaps for pediatric cochlear implant services in Massachusetts and has teamed with Rep. Jamie Eldridge towards this goal with Bill No. 3855.
